Applying through the Housing Registry

BC Housing runs a central Housing Registry — one application that puts you in line for subsidized homes managed by BC Housing and many non-profit and co-op housing providers across the province. If you live in BC, have a low income, and meet the criteria, you may qualify.

• Apply online, by mail, or in person at a BC Housing office. Start early — waitlists can be long.
• Keep your application current — update your contact information and circumstances, or you can lose your place in line.

Housing co-operatives are another option — resident-run communities, sometimes with subsidized units. The Co-operative Housing Federation of BC lists co-ops and how to apply.

Rent assistance you might not know about

You don't have to be in subsidized housing to get help with rent. BC Housing runs monthly rent-assistance programs for people who qualify:

• SAFER (Shelter Aid For Elderly Renters) — monthly help for low-income seniors who rent.
• Rental Assistance Program (RAP) — monthly help for low-income working families with children.

Check whether you're eligible at bchousing.org. If a temporary crisis puts you at risk of eviction, the BC Rent Bank offers short-term loans or grants to help you stay housed.

Making your search easier

• Apply to more than one program or building — you can be on several lists at once.
• Watch for scams. Never send a deposit or e-transfer for a place you haven't seen, and be wary of "landlords" who can't meet or show the unit.
• Ask about accessibility up front if you or someone in your household needs specific features.
• Keep good records of your applications and who you spoke to.
